Cheom-Beong

Artist Song Mingyu has been consistently working on translating phenomena and patterns encountered in everyday life into geometric symbols, which are then rendered as abstract images on the canvas. These translated images are not faithful representations of reality, but rather edited outcomes that have been symbolized and transformed into a system of signs through the artist’s own unique protocol. The exhibition “Cheom-Beong” unfolds against the backdrop of the swimming pool- a subject Song has been exploring since his 2016 solo show, “The Atlantic at the edge of a swimming pool.”

The artist’s memory of the swimming pool originates from a frightening experience in a deep pool in Thailand. To overcome his fear of water, he began learning to swim later in life. This process of training naturally became a significant motif in his work. The act of swimming-requiring one to release bodily tension and move forward through repetitive motion-resonates with the artist’s method of building a solid visual surface through the transformation and repetition of images.

“Cheom-Beong” visualizes the transformation of swimming pool scenery and kinetic energy into symbolic forms. These symbols overlap and intersect, emerging abstractly on a two-dimensional plane. The artist incorporates not only external visual elements-such as the shapes of pool tiles or the curves of waves-but also internal thoughts and sensations that surface while swimming, symbolizing them through a subjective visual language. These images embody potential energy formed between gravity and buoyancy, relationships between mass and height, correlations between time and movement, and even reflections on aging.

This exhibition presents the artist’s journey of exploring inner landscapes, using the structured scenery of a swimming pool and his experience within it as a metaphor. The accumulated layers, based on autobiographical experiences, serve both as a symbolized record of an individual existence and a visual evocation of sensory memory. As viewers follow these fragmented images, they are invited to reimagine the artist’s physical, emotional, and mental sensations. Through this process, the exhibition aspires to create a moment of empathy that extends beyond the artist’s personal narrative to reflect the social landscapes surrounding him.
