Thickness of the Other End of the Symbolized Surface – Song Mingyu

Lee, Sue (Curator of Art Space Hue)

In this era of our lives, the present and the future coexist. Artificial intelligence wins the game against humans, and sometimes finds a special monster that lives somewhere in the augmented reality. Communication holograms appearing in “Star Wars” are realized, and a clone of “Blade Runner” is also being made. As Marshall McLuhan predicted in the middle of the 20th century, our lives and perceptions changed with technological advancement. Thanks to the brilliant lighting, “Night Brightened by the Day” is no longer a time for relaxation, and network technology keeps 24 hours a day tied to work and relationships. We are faced with expectations and surprises for another each day in the unfamiliar future world that technology embodies. We are obeying and adapting to this flow without any resistance whatsoever.

Regardless of whether our senses follow this era, science and technology are developing at a rapid pace, and capital urges us to adapt quickly to the environment. Capital uses technology to create new goods and presents a more comfortable and cozy future. The phone releases a model with a new feature once a year to encourage the purchase, and the computer OS is now updating itself so that we can adapt to it. As we connect to society through computers and mobile phones, we have to adapt to the language of the ever changing media.

If so, what is the visual language of today? The medium that dominates today's visuality is also a digital medium, and ultimately juxtaposes pixels that are only reduced to bits 0 and 1 to produce vivid images and pictures. However, it is not enough to explain the characteristics of images provided by the visual media of today with this simple logic. Artist Song Mingyu interprets today's visual characteristics as symbols. Symbols, pictograms, and geometrical figures are arranged in the work. Some shapes are repetitive, leaving a long trail like tire marks. Each shape has a meaning that only the artist knows, and these are gathered to form an integrated landscape. At first glance, his works, such as printed pictures, are delicately drawn by hand. The artist interprets each image element to be placed in the work in the artist's own language and writes it on a computer, only to move it back to the canvas.

Song Mingyu's work is a landscape painting, even though it is not a landscape painting that we commonly know about. His work of “The Way Six People See the Moon” has a round shape on the six square canvases. Each work is a symbol of six different people's interpretations of one image, the "Moon," symbolic of each of the different gazes of one object. Song Mingyu's moon does not take any realistic text except the idea that the “moon is round.” And although they have different notions of the moon, the six moons are connected to form a single work.

The work of the series connected by more than three layers by Song Mingyu was inspired by the medieval "Isenheim shoes." The form of the shoe has already been used by Francis Bacon and Damian Hurst in connection with the concept of death. Song Mingyu's shoes are "to make unseen things seen," but his work is "to hide what is seen as a symbol." Here, we find the key to interpreting Song Mingyu's work, which is disguising with what is revealed. It is the "real moon" that is hidden in the work as six people are exposed. The artist calls those who claim to be true what he has said to be a 'sophist.' It is originally spelled as 'sophist,' yet the artist replaces the letter of '詭' with '卦', thereby condensing it as a 'fortune teller,' and paradoxically points out the incompetence of the experts who predict the truth as they see it. Through the symbolic situation of interpreting different objects on the object of the moon, it turns out that their interpretations and prospects are rather distorted. Numerous data and computer analysis of expert interpretations support legitimacy, but data is organized in the perspective of a particular subject. The artist always calls the system containing this error as an 'incompetent system' and criticizes the innumerable 'distortions' produced through it.

Song Mingyu's other theme is science fiction (SF). SF movies reproduce the non-existent world with the state of the art imaging technology. And this 'state of the art' is changing according to the times. The Star Wars series, which was produced in the 70s and the 80s, used to be the best technology at the time, offering a wonderful world, but it looks dull and coarse in the eyes of the present. The way in which images are interpreted until the image of the future becomes a rusty past has changed with imaging technology. SF also mirrors our society by creating a new world that will never exist in the future. As such, SF movies provide a new way of viewing images as well as being a symbol of a time period.

Song Mingyu's work reinterprets this technical image. “We Are Talking About Different Stories While Watching the Same Moon” is a huge landscape painting that is comprised of 36 works. This work transformed the night sea of Daebudo, where the artist's studio is located, into symbolic figures. Regular dots, dotted lines and spirals are arranged in the background of the darkness of the night, reminiscent of electronic beeps. In the top row, there are yellow circles that symbolize twelve moons, and there is a flower shaped artist's moon on a slightly lower row. The twelve months are connected in a line and seem to represent the trail of the moon in time. There are also long dotted lines, regular marks, spring shapes and lines that seem to be derived from computer formulas, which make one to feel trail or time. Repeated shapes are connected to each other and form one big picture. In this work, individual opinions on the moon are read such that they are not different from each other, and the whole is read as a flow of the moons.

Song Mingyu's work has been subjected to imaging through a computer program, revealing only the technical aspects of brushing, contrasting, perspective, and other elements of painting. However, when one gets closer, the traces of manual labor appear. The irony that analogue work has gone through the digital appearance, coexists in a single piece of work. This irony lets one to think about the difference between painting and digital imagery. Another way of painting is emerging at the point of disappointing our expectation that a flat work would be painting. Could the photographer have chosen the landscape to interpret today's new imaging techniques, just as the impressionists painted landscape paintings looking for the possibility of new paintings?

As he said “to hide what is seen with symbols,” Song Mingyu disguises today's landscape as a piece of abstract painting made up of symbols. The artist strategically announces that he has camouflaged himself, suggesting that the epoch of the age is hidden in a thin, symbolic surface. The familiar technical image allows us to predict our future landscape. DDP seems to be a huge spacecraft landed on the ground, and we are reminiscent of the Tower of the Sauron in the recently built Lotte World Tower not because the buildings really refer to a spacecraft or a tower, but our eyes would lay the images of what we have already seen over the objects. As such, today's reality is covered with a thin film of familiar symbols and figures, and is pushed into our future with the words such as 'best' and 'first.' It is possible that Song Mingyu may have been informing us that the thickness of our lives is truly beginning to form beyond the screen through his works that are covered with a thin, symbolized image.
